Why Filtration Is Non-Negotiable
Pond filters do two essential jobs: mechanical filtration physically removes suspended particles, leaves, and fish waste from the water column, while biological filtration uses beneficial bacteria to convert toxic ammonia (from fish waste and decaying matter) into nitrites and then nitrates — compounds that are far less harmful to aquatic life. Together, they maintain water clarity, protect fish and plants, and reduce algae by stripping away the nutrients that fuel blooms. At Utah Water Gardens we carry three filter systems: the Matala BioSteps mechanical above-water filter, the ClearGuard pressurized in-line filter, and UV clarifiers in a range of wattages.
Filter Types We Carry
Matala BioSteps — above-surface mechanical filter with bio-mat media; cleans debris and houses beneficial bacteria; needs weekly cleaning while running
ClearGuard — pressurized mechanical filter that can be buried and concealed for a cleaner landscape look; also houses biological media
UV Clarifiers — assorted brands and wattages; use ultraviolet light to clump free-floating algae so mechanical filters can remove it; note: UV light can affect beneficial bacteria colonies
Skimmers — installed at pond construction; trap floating leaves and debris at the surface; must be cleaned weekly; do not capture debris that sinks to the bottom
Biological bog filters — bare-root plants in pea gravel or lava rock substrate; trap sediment and house beneficial bacteria naturally
