Every pond is different, but most cleanings follow the same general flow.

Assess the pond and how deep the cleaning needs to go

We review buildup, fish, access, filtration, and any concerns you have noticed. Photos and visit notes document the pond’s condition and give us a record to compare on future visits.

Protect fish during the cleaning process

If fish need to be moved, we use careful handling and aerated holding tanks with pond water to help keep stress as low as possible.

Remove the buildup causing the main problems

For a full cleanout, we drain the pond, flush debris toward a low point, pump out sludge, and remove heavy muck with buckets where needed. We pressure wash the pond surfaces as part of the agreed cleanout.

Clean filters, skimmers, and flow areas

We clean the parts of the system that most directly affect water movement, filtration, and overall day-to-day performance.

Refill, treat, and stabilize the pond

We treat refill water as needed and generally test equipment, waterfall flow, and visible water loss before leaving. A long refill or pending repair can mean startup happens later; we explain what to watch and when to contact us.

We explain the conditions we documented and recommend next steps for maintenance, plants, filtration, or aeration. Repairs are discussed separately. After handoff, watch water level, flow, plant growth, and fish behavior, and tell us about changes.

From Hand Work to Heavy Sediment Removal

Our equipment includes small pumps, pumps up to 50 horsepower for suction dredging and gravel work, two vacuum units, and an amphibious machine for water-management tasks. We select equipment for the job, rather than bringing the same setup to every pond.

Crews can range from three to twenty people depending on project size and scope. Those numbers describe our project capacity, not a standard crew included with every cleaning.

Cleanout, Maintenance, or Dredging?

We generally plan full cleanouts in spring and fall, with ongoing maintenance through summer. Larger ponds—often around a quarter acre or more—may benefit from a dredging assessment, but size alone does not decide the method. Sediment, access, liner construction, and the project goals all matter. Some projects may involve machinery or specialist diver support.

Vegetation can be removed by hand or with amphibious equipment, depending on the site. Explore pond maintenance or aquatic plant harvesting if accumulated sediment is not the main issue.

Fish Care and a Thoughtful Plan for the Water

A full cleanout involves more than draining and refilling. We plan temporary fish holding and discuss how water will be managed for your particular pond.

Holding Fish During a Cleanout

We bring holding tanks and use water from the pond while cleaning takes place. Fish return after the cleanout and preparation for their return. Tell us about valuable koi, fish concerns, or special handling requests when arranging the visit so we can discuss the plan.

Fresh refill water needs appropriate conditioning for chlorine and chloramine when present, along with a careful transition for the fish. A cleanout is not a treatment for a fish disease.

Do We Save All the Pond Water?

Not as a standard requirement. Important nitrifying bacteria grow on filter media and other submerged surfaces, including rocks; storing the water alone does not preserve the entire biological filter. Cleaning can also disturb that filter, so the restart and follow-up care matter.

Depending on the pond and fish, we can discuss retaining more water as a separately planned service. Water replacement and water reuse each have a place; neither is an automatic answer for every pond.

Can Removed Water Be Used on the Lawn?

Where appropriate for the water condition and site, we can discuss directing removed pond water onto your lawn. We agree on the discharge location first, taking recent pond treatments, drainage, and runoff into account. If this is part of your visit, we may suggest pausing the sprinklers that day.

A Cleanout—and a Closer Look at a Hidden Leak

At a pond in Pepperwood, winter rodents had chewed through several areas of the liner. After the cleaning, continued water loss showed that the feature needed more than a cleanout.

Our team arranged a crane to move large rocks, exposed the liner, and found close to a dozen holes. We patched the damage and rebuilt the feature, resolving the water loss.

This was a separate repair project following cleaning. Crane work and liner repairs are not included in a routine cleanout.
